Emilia-Romagna
Introduction
Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy lies between the Apennine Mountains in the south and the River Po in the north. The capital Bologna encountered extreme suffering during WWII. In July 1943, a massive aerial bombardment destroyed a significant part of the city centre. After the armistice of 1943, Bologna became a strong centre of the Italian resistance movement, which you can learn about at Bologna’s Resistance Museum. Monte Sole Historical Park can be found in a natural area where hundreds of civilians were killed by the Nazis in the fall of 1944. Follow the ‘Il memoriale’ itinerary of the park to discover all the symbolic places of the massacre. Walk through Bologna’s Polish war cemetery, where Polish soldiers who fell in 1944 and in 1945 during the Battle of Bologna are honoured. The battle was part of the Spring 1945 offensive in Italy. Then spend some time in the commune of Medicina, where the last fierce urban battle occurred on April 16, 1945.
