In 1940, the population of Terezín was ejected and the garrison town turned into a Jewish ghetto and transit camp. From 1941 until the liberation on 3 May 1945, about 133.000 Jewish people were imprisoned in the camp. Some parts of the former camp now function as a museum, memorialising those who lived and died there.

The museum is located in the underground crypt of the Orthodox cathedral Saints Cyril and Methodius on Reslova Street in central Prague. This is a WWII historical location where a bloody battle took place in June 1942 between Czech commandos and German troops.
