In 1940, the population of Terezín was ejected and the garrison town turned into a Jewish ghetto and transit camp. From 1941 until the liberation on 3 May 1945, about 133.000 Jewish people were imprisoned in the camp. Some parts of the former camp now function as a museum memorialising those who lived and died there. Different permanent exhibitions can be visited on site, including The Small Fortress 1940-1945 which is devoted to the history of the political prison and records the fates of Czech prisoners transferred to other concentration camps within the Nazi German Reich, and The Ghetto Museum which features short-term exhibitions and a cinema where documentary films are shown.
