“How extremism wants to mislead the people” – The examples of Nazi and Petainist propagandas

[Exhibition is in French]

An exhibition conceived by the Washington Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) on Nazi propaganda, enriched by a French section on Petainist propaganda by the Fondation du Camp des Milles – Mémoire et Éducation.

The Third Reich probably represents a summit in the “art of winning souls”, through oversimplification, lies and manipulation. The authoritarian regime of Pétain also set up an elaborate propaganda system.

This exhibition highlights the ability of extremists to make people believe in their demagogy. A strategy that is nevertheless simple to decipher. It is certainly simpler than those that are developed today on social networks.

It can be summed up in a paradox that must be solved by those who carry these radical ambitions: how to reach power democratically in order to bring democracy down?

There is only one answer to this question: lying. In order to try to convince people, but also to blur the words and landmarks that could be a point of support for resistance.
