The Netherlands
Introduction
Every corner of the Netherlands hides treasures from the past. During WWII, after four years of occupation, the Allied troops entered the city of Maastricht in September 1944. After Operation Market Garden, the terrible Battle of the Scheldt followed. In early 1945, the area around Nijmegen became the scene of Operation Veritable, the start of the Rhineland Offensive. Nowadays, you can still retrace the course of the Battle of the Scheldt in southwestern Netherlands, by visiting Liberation Museum Zeeland and the war cemeteries in Bergen op Zoom. Find a great number of Market Garden-related sites, especially around Arnhem and Nijmegen, which were greatly damaged during the war. Visit National Liberation Museum 1944-1945 or Airborne Museum ‘Hartenstein’ and gaze over the iconic John Frost Bridge of Arnhem. Discover Hell’s Highway in Museum Wings of Liberation. In the provinces of Limburg and Overijssel, walk through American, British and Canadian war cemeteries, and explore the Eyewitness Museum and the Memory Museum.
