Limburg

Introduction

Limburg experienced a rich history during WWII: the region was the first Dutch province the Allied armies reached in September 1944. Yet it took until early 1945 before the entire province was liberated – these additional months of fighting turned out to be fatal for numerous soldiers and civilians. Nowadays, Limburg’s unique war history can still be seen all around, in museums, historical monuments, war cemeteries and other locations. Reflect on the sacrifices made during WWII while you walk through Margraten NL-US, the only American military cemetery of the Netherlands, or the German War Cemetery in Ysselsteyn, which contains the graves of 31,598 German casualties who died in the Netherlands. Head to the Eyewitness Museum in Beek to learn about the terrifying war time of the German paratrooper August Segel.
