Zeeland
Introduction
Discover in Zeeland a land of shores and islands endowed with a unique history. Due to its strategic position on trading and migratory routes, Zeeland has always been of prime importance. In WWII the region was devastated during the Battle of the Scheldt – a fierce struggle that still occupies a prominent place in the collective memory of the population and beyond. From monuments and churches to an array of war museums, the region is rife with historic sites and points of interest bearing witness to the past. Among them, the Liberation Museum Zeeland presents the Battle of the Scheldt and other key-episodes of local history. The Het Polderhuis museum retraces local history in a more interactive way through a collection of objects and replicas, photos and videos from WWII, and Het Watersnoodmuseum tells the tragic story of the massive flood that hit the Province of Zeeland in 1953.
