Krakow and Malopolska
Introduction
Better known as ‘Lesser Poland’, the region of Malopolska in southern Poland, is brimming with medieval landmarks that bear witness to its rich history. The region was not spared by WWII: the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz Birkenau, one of the gravest symbols of terror and the Holocaust, was located here. Auschwitz’s current memorial and museum is a unique and unsettling site of remembrance. In Krakow, the capital of Malopolska, you can visit the Wawel Royal Castle and the Kraków Cloth Hall, and choose from different museums highlighting important aspects of WWII in Poland. At the Oskar Schindler Factory, you will discover impressive exhibitions on the life of the Polish and Jewish inhabitants of Krakow during WWII. The Eagle Pharmacy Museum, located within the limits of the former ghetto area, features exhibitions commemorating the holocaust of Kraków Jews. Both museums are part of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow.
