Warmia and Masuria

Introduction

The region of Warmia and Masuria in north-eastern Poland is known as the Land of the Thousands Lakes due to its Great Masurian Lake district. Hidden in the woods close to the village of Kętrzyn you will find a unique historic site related to WWII: the Wolf’s Lair, Adolf Hitler’s first and preferred military headquarters in the East. Hitler spent over three years in this top secret complex, which was built in 1941 at the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. The attempted assassination on him in the 20 July 1944 Plot took place in the Wolf’s Lair. Nowadays, a large number of bunkers remain visible on the site.
