The Battle of the Scheldt 1944
The estuary of the river Scheldt, on the border of western Holland and Flanders, hosted from September up to November 1944 the scene for one of the most strategic battles of the Second World War. The big harbour facilities of Antwerp where at stake for the Allied cause.
It was a United Nations force under Canadian command that fought against a resilient German defender in the Battle of the Scheldt. Thanks to the determination of the Allied infantry men, predominately Canadian boys, victory was gained. A victory which paved the way for the successful Allied invasion of Germany in 1945.
The Battle of the Scheldt is Canadian heritage and plays a proud and important role in the history of the people of Canada.
First day visit the Breskens Pocket with highlights at the Leopold Canal. Visit For Freedom museum in Knokke or Canada museum in Adegem.
Day 2Visit Walcheren Island with highlights of Westkapelle, Dishoek, the Causeway and Vlissingen. Visit Bevrijdingsmuseum Zeeland in Nieuwdorp.
Day 3Visit the Brabant Wal with Woensdrecht Bergen op Zoom and Wouwse Plantage.
Tours feature period artefacts, period CBC reports, photographs and original film footage.
NB: tours are tailor-made based on the customer’s requests. However, most tours include a visit to the Canadian and British War Cemetry in Bergen op Zoom and Adegem.
